About Me

I love to read the "About Me" pages of other sites. I am curious about people, who they are and what makes them tick. Maybe that comes from being an ex-performer. Here are some things you might want to know about me (or not!):
  • Before becoming a mother, I was a thespian (okay, waitress.) I was a Triple Threat: I could sing, dance and act. Which also meant that I had a hard time concentrating on just one skill because I loved all three so much. I was a performer because I felt drawn to these arts, I couldn't think of anything else to do, I was idealistic, and had enough talent that I thought that pursuing performing was what I was meant to do (what on earth was I thinking?!) I think what really interested me about the theatre was the power of connecting, the universality of the human experience and the fulfillment found in creative expression. I still love the theatre, but it was not really meant to be my life's work (didn't know it at the time.) Now I perform by reading stories out loud to my kids, teaching and occasionally embarrassing my kids by breaking out into song and dance in public.
  • I have a Bachelor's Degree from UC Irvine with a major in Drama and a minor in Psychology. I met my husband at UCLA where I attended the Theatre Arts Department for my first two years of college before transferring to UC Irvine. A lot of people scratch their heads when they find out I transferred out of UCLA. UC Irvine had a better program for me. I was just at UCLA to meet my husband, I think.
  • I am hoping to go back to school and get a Master's Degree one day when my girls are mature enough and I can focus on studying. This blog is part of my discovery of what I might want to study and focus on.
  • I love teaching natural childbirth education and helping mother/baby dyads with breastfeeding. I get to a win/win situation here, as I get to help others and at the same time vicariously experience the joy and wonder of babies and little ones as I only have two children myself.
  • I do not wear Birkenstocks or have hairy armpits; I often have hairy legs as I forget to shave as I am more the absent-minded professor or get-lost-in-a-creative-endeavor type of person (you can feel really sorry for my poor husband.) I do like granola. Long skirts are pretty. I'm allergic to patchouli.
  • I am left-handed (which probably explains a lot.)
  • I am not religious, but I am spiritual. I was raised in a Christian family; my dad was really Catholic and my mother is Episcopalian. One of the best things my mother ever did was to break from my dad's religion and follow her own choice. This paved the way for my sisters and me to make our own choices - of course, to their dismay, none of us turned out to follow Christianity, even after attending Catholic school (or maybe because of.) However, as my sister likes to say, we are still Catholic by superstition -- it never really leaves you, kind of lives in your soul.
  • I love making jam. I find something so cool about doing the water-canning method. I never ceased to be amazed after I am done making a batch of jam. I learned this all on my own (yea, me!) Jam makes a great gift!
  • I am especially enchanted with babies and toddlers - they are so darn cute!
